Gonzalez launches bid for state legislature
Article published on Tuesday, May 20, 2008
MADEIRA BEACH – George A. Gonzalez has qualified by petition to run for Florida House District 54. Gonzalez and his team of volunteers filed more than 1,200 petitions in order to qualify.

The seat is currently held by Jim Frishe, R-St. Petersburg.

Gonzalez, D-Madeira Beach, opposed legislation to raise tolls on the bridges leading to St. Pete Beach. He helped organize opposition to the proposed legislation and worked with The Bayway Task Force group until the bill was withdrawn. Gonzalez has also been critical of the handling of the property insurance and property tax crisis.

“For the past two years, the Florida legislature has had two major issues on their agenda – fix property insurance and fix property taxes; they failed on both counts during two consecutive legislative sessions,” said Gonzalez. “It is time to send a representative to the State Legislature who understands that the job of a state representative is to find and implement solutions on behalf of the residents of this community, not pander to a small number of special interest groups who pay lobbyists big bucks to influence legislators.”

House District 54 covers portions of Largo, Clearwater, including Clearwater Beach, and runs south along the beach communities to Terra Verde and St. Pete Beach.
