REDINGTON BEACH – The Redington Beach Town Commission received a petition May 19 urging repair of a seawall.
Resident Madsen circulated a petition on several streets directly affected by the seawall, getting about 100 signatures.
Madsen’s actions came after the May 5 commission meeting when a motion by Commissioner Fred Steiermann to get the seawall repaired this year died after failing to get a second.
Madsen said he observed before the May 5 meeting 11 holes in the wall and now are 24.
He urged action soon on the repairs and not waiting until the seawall crumbles. Resident comments on the petition agreed with moving forward now with the repairs.
“(We) want a safe causeway to get in and out of town,” Madsen said.
The 161st Avenue causeway serves as the only road connector to Fourth Street East, Fifth Street East and Sixth Street East.
The south side of the seawall was repaired and the north side of the seawall still needs to be rebuilt. The approximate $155,000 cost of the project is in the town’s budget.
Mayor Nick Simons said the action taken at the May 5 meeting was to defer the project one year. The commission was acting as good stewards of the town’s money, waiting to see the taxable values of properties in town.
The north side of the wall is not in as much jeopardy as the south side of the wall, Simons said.
Simons said he appreciated Madsen’s efforts to get the signatures. He said they would continue to closely monitor the seawall and do patching or reassessment of postponement of the project as needed.
Alarm registration Residents can pick up home alarm registration forms at Town Hall.
If a home alarm is registered with the sheriff’s office the first two false alarms are free and the third false alarm is $75. If a home alarm is not registered the first three false alarm calls are $175 each, said Town Clerk Janina Patrus.
The new county ordinance takes effect July 1.
The countywide experience with false house alarms prompted the new fee system, Simons said. At a January commission meeting Commissioner Michele Fox said 64 of the town’s 66 alarm calls were false in a recent one-year period.
Firehouse refurbishment
The city is reviewing several bids for putting a new roof on the old firehouse.
The repairs will take place as soon as possible, Steiermann said.
The proposed firehouse project on the circa-1960s building at 101 164th Ave. includes taking the top off the building, installing a new roof, treating the building for termites, and making the building watertight.
The commission will review the project at its June 2 meeting.
Wine Fest slated
The town’s annual Wine Fest will be Nov. 7 at Friendship Park and Town Hall.
The commission approved using town property for the Redington Beach Property Owners Association’s yearly fundraiser at the commission’s May 19 meeting.
The commission had discussed the venue change at its May 5 meeting and wanted to give residents the opportunity to comment before making a decision.
