MADEIRA BEACH – Boaters who want to display their patriotism and have a little fun at the same time may be interested in the inaugural Constitution Boat Parade and Patriot Rally set for Saturday, July 4.

A $500 first-place prize will be awarded to the boat owner who best represents an article or amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The second-place winner will receive $200 and third-place winner a gift certificate.

The top three boats that best display the American patriotic spirit will receive gift certificates.

Judging will be based on creativity, originality and patriotism, said organzier Kathy Haddon.

The entry is free and the deadline to enter is July 4. To enter, call 581-3908.

Participants in the boat parade will gather in the cove next to Madeira Beach Middle School at 2 p.m. where particpants will be given entry numbers to post on the starboard sides of their boats.

The parade route goes south in Boca Ciega Bay to John’s Pass Village and passing by Gator’s Cafe about 3 p.m. for judging.

A party for boaters will follow on a sand bar east of John’s Pass until 5:30 p.m. when the winning entries will be announced.

In addition to the parade, the family-oriented Patriot Rally gets under way at noon at Gator’s Cafe, 12754 Kingfish Drive, Treasure Island, with over $2,500 in cash and prizes on the line.

The event will include special speakers, radio hosts, live music and prize drawings.

There also will be a drawing contest for kids built around the theme “What the Constitution means to me.”

Sponsors are the National Center for Constitutional Studies, Gator’s Cafe, Genesis Skin and Laser Centers, Sea Hawk Premium Yacht Finishes, Refinish Line Auto Paint Supplies, The Art of Touch, Chris Craft of Tampa Bay, Windworks, Boston Bill Sunglasses, Virginia England CPA, Sign of the Dolphin, West Marine and Beach Pizza.
