Damage to condo property alleged
Article published on Tuesday, July 15, 2008
REDINGTON SHORES – A representative of the Gulf Mariner Condominiums at 17580 Gulf Blvd. repeated charges made previously regarding Indian Shores Police Department cruisers riding over condo property to reach the beach.

The condo association has had to replace a sprinkler system twice due to damage by the vehicles, said condo resident Oscar Sierra at the July 9 Town Commission meeting

Sierra said the police cars are attempting to drive on the beach access at 176th Avenue but have been blocked and forced onto condo property by “a pile of lumber” left by the town. Sierra requested the obstacle be removed, giving the cruisers “a straight shot to the beach.”

Mayor Jody Armstrong said the “lumber” referred to is actually pilings dug 20 feet in the sand. The law does not permit beach sand to be disturbed during turtle nesting season, she said. The season lasts through October.

Commissioner Casey Wojcik offered to work with the condo residents to find a solution to the problem that does not involve removing the pilings.

“We need to get a little creative,” he said.

Town officials and the condo owners have been warring over the issue for a while. Sierra began his remarks by apologizing to City Attorney James Denhardt for heated comments he had made to Denhardt on the subject at a recent workshop meeting.

“We have been accused of bullying tactics,” Sierra said. “We are not bullies, we are citizens. But if we are not treated the way we should be, we will speak out.”

Wojcik said the town “needs emergency access when we need it, but we need to respect private property.”

Armstrong asked Wojcik to “fix the problem” by the next commission meeting.
