NORTH REDINGTON BEACH – A Wesley Chapel woman was arrested Monday, Aug. 18, and charged with grand theft for reportedly stealing $250,000 from her employer.
According to a report from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Valisa Ann Mathis, 46, took the money from DoubleTree Beach Resort, 17120 Gulf Blvd., North Redington Beach. Mathis was an employee and worked as the controller managing all accounts for the resort.
The grand theft took place over several years beginning March 2011 through February 2014.
Detectives assigned to the Economic Crimes Unit said the funds were discovered missing during an internal audit and a report of the suspected theft was made to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office. Mathis reportedly utilized direct deposit to deposit the funds into her personal bank account. Mathis utilized the stolen funds for personal gain to include leisure activities and monthly expenses.
Detectives met with Mathis on and she was arrested for grand theft. She was booked into the Pinellas County Jail. Bond was set at $50,000.
