This is a bird’s eye view of the Treasure Island/C.W. Bill Young Bascule Bridge from its control tower.
TREASURE ISLAND – The grand opening on Saturday, Aug. 25 of the new Treasure Island/C.W. Bill Young Bascule Bridge will include a boat parade, ribbon cutting and a plaque dedication.
The festivities begin at 10 a.m. at the St. Petersburg side of the bridge that closes at 9 a.m. to all vehicular traffic. It will reopen at noon.
There will be plenty of parking on both sides. Those coming in from St. Petersburg can park at 79th Street and Treasure Island Causeway. People on the Treasure Island side can park on Paradise Lane. Motorists are urged not to park at the Treasure Island Tennis and Yacht Club.
Among the dignitaries expected to participate are Rep. Bill Young, Mayor Mary Maloof, Don Hambidge, public works director; Jim Phillips of EC Driver Engineering, John Meagher of Johnson Brothers, the bridge contractors, and others.
The bridge was named for Young because he was instrumental in obtaining $50 million in federal transportation funds.
The ribbon cutting begins at 10:45 a.m. and the dedication will be held 10 minutes later. The boat parade begins at 11 a.m. The east end of the bridge will remain in a down position. It is a prime parade viewing area.
