SOUTH PASADENA – After nine years of directing the South Pasadena Community Band, Max Millspaugh recently announced his retirement.
The new man on the podium will be John Hoover. Hoover received his degrees from the University of Louisville and taught instrumental music in the Jefferson County School System in Louisville, Ky., for 27 years from elementary through high school. He also held the position of director of bands at the University of Louisville for four years and was the bandmaster of the 202nd Army Band of the Kentucky National Guard for 25 years.
Before leaving Louisville, Hoover directed the River Cities Community Band, a position he held for nine years. He played the French horn professionally in the Louisville Philharmonic Orchestra for several years and until recently has been playing in several groups here in the Tampa Bay area.
The first concert of the season will be Thursday, Oct. 10, 7:30 p.m., at Galetea Garden, 7001 Sunset Drive, South Pasadena. The concert will feature show tunes, marches and music for all ages.
Rehearsals will start on Thursday, Sept. 5. Rehearsals take place Thursday evenings at the South Pasadena City Hall. Those interested in joining should call Hoover at 398-9639.
