Indian Shores Police Chief Terry Hughes models one of the pink badges the town’s police officers will be wearing in October.
INDIAN SHORES – Indian Shores police officers are going to be wearing pink badges on their uniforms during October in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Chief Terry Hughes made the announcement authorizing the pink badges at the Oct. 3 Town Hall meeting.

Indian Shores Police Major Emily Smoak is a breast cancer survivor. At her own expense, Smoak purchased the pink badges for all her fellow officers to wear in support of efforts to find a cure for breast cancer.

Supporting one of the pink badges himself, Hughes said, “All of us (at the ISPD) want to congratulate (Smoak), and give her our continued support for winning her battle against this terrible disease, but the war is not over until there is a cure.”

Holiday Halfathon

A resolution supporting the 16th annual Holiday Halfathon Dec. 10 was approved by the Town Council. The town authorized the mayor to execute the necessary lanes closures on Gulf Boulevard.

Another resolution passed in support of the 19th annual Clearwater Distance Classic, which will be held Jan. 21.

The road races will span the beach communities from Clearwater to Madeira Beach.

Northbound curbside lanes will be closed for both events, but not the southbound lanes. Florida Gulf Beaches Road Races Organization will assume all costs for extra police personnel for each one-day event.

Board moves

John Yackowski and Karl Olander were re-appointed to seats 3 and 4, respectively, on the Indian Shores Board of Adjustment and Appeals.

The appointments are for a 3-year term, ending in October 2020. Olander is serving as the vice chairman on the board.

Meanwhile, Daniel Bauer was re-appointed to serve on the town’s Police Pension Board of Directors for another 4-year term, ending in October 2021.

Bridge club

The Town Council approved the request by Joan Barlas to reinstate the Duplicate Bridge Club with weekly meetings to be held on Wednesdays, 12:30 to 4 p.m., at the Municipal Center.

Barlas had been running the Duplicate Bridge Club until this past summer when she disbanded the group and cancelled her insurance.

Conditions for reinstatement include that Barlas reactivate the insurance, provide sign-in sheets, and clean up after the class ends by restoring the room to its prior state. “(Barlas) must follow the rules,” said Councilor Petruccelli.

Qualifying dates

Town Clerk Stephanie Waters said qualifying dates for the March 2018 municipal election are being delayed until the election materials are translated into Spanish. They are already available in English.

The town’s population has grown to the point of requiring compliance with the dual language regulation.

The only position up for election is mayor, Waters said.
