Art Guild celebrates holiday

TREASURE ISLAND – Members of the Treasure Island Art Guild have a colorful show for the holiday season at the Community Center through Dec. 31.

The event features the works of Lynn Carhart, Bruce Fallender, Helen Mullins, Louise Garriques and Rita Gould.

Carhart, a retired educator from New Jersey, offers her eclectic water media pieces. Particularly inviting is her “Lazy Daze,” a soft landscape painted entirely in grays, the sky, mountains and lake, with a tiny, white-sailed boat in the distance.

Fallender, an award-winning artist, shares four of his intriguing abstract works. His colorful watercolor, “Dance of the Sun God” demands attention. Flaming hot reds ease into golds, then fade into shades of lovely cool blues, all filtered through lacy patterns of white.

Mullins’ oil “Florida Fifties” shows us a 1957 Chevy at an open air Florida welcome center that seems to have grown around a majestic palm tree. Helen’s vibrant colors and careful detail, such as the puddles from an afternoon shower, inspire a warm feeling of welcome home.

Garriques’ Impressionistic style is appealing in oil, acrylic or pastels. Whether a pastoral scene of old Florida, a quiet escape to Maximo Park or a sprig of red flowers in “Budding Beauty,” Louise invites the viewer to enter her paintings. This is particularly true for “Man’s Best Friend,” who appears ready for a friendly scratch or maybe a quick run.

Gould’s large, bold, acrylic compositions feature an Italian flavor in two balcony scenes. Both “Hanging Out” and “The Wash” capture the motion of strong breezes by the selected use of controlled diagonal lines. “Roosters” seems to suggests a mosaic of shapes and color. Her still life “Poppies” illustrates her knowledge of design, values and rich color.

The exhibit can be seen at the Center at Park Street and 106th Avenue. Call 547-4575 for hours of operations.
