REDINGTON BEACH – Thanks to Mayor Nick Simons, his commission, former Commissioner Paul Warren and his technical advisory committee, the town is about to enter cyber space with a new Web site.
After the commission gives it a one final review it will be available to the public.
When Simons first took office and looked at the Web site he inherited, he said, “The only thing worse than no Web site is a bad Web site.”
The commission passed a resolution in July to get the project in motion. Warren, an unpaid volunteer who chairs the technical advisory committee, briefed the commission and a handful of interested citizens Tuesday, Dec. 4.
The new Web site is expected to update the list of current officials. Currently, two commissioners who were defeated in the last election are still listed as holding office. The former mayor also remains on the Web site.
Simons was effusive with his praise after viewing the site’s contents on Warren’s lap top.
“That’s what I like about the people in this town,” he said. “They love it and give a lot of their time.”
Short rental ordinance
An ordinance regulating short-term rentals is close to being ready for public hearing. Town Attorney Andrew Salzman is finalizing a draft that is expected to receive its first reading at the town’s Jan. 15 commission meeting.
Short term rentals have been a controversial issue in Redington Beach for several years. The town has essentially ignored the issue or at best used a policy letter written by a former town attorney as an enforcement tool.
The current effort will put regulatory teeth into an ordinance that is expected to include prohibition of renting a single-family residence for less than 181 days.
