Danny Taylor is IRB’s new interim city manager.
INDIAN ROCKS BEACH – City Commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday night to appoint Planning and Zoning Director Danny Taylor to the post of interim city manager.

Taylor, who has headed P&Z for just over two years, will continue his current duties while serving as interim city manager as the city begins the now familiar task of searching for a new manager.

Commissioners, including Mayor Bill Ockunzzi and Jose Coppen, speculated that that process may take up to four months.

Taylor, who will receive $1,000 a month above his usual salary, is the logical candidate according to Commissioner Bert Valery who had suggested Taylor at a meeting prior to the holiday recess. Valery said Taylor meets the requirements.

“He has a four-year degree, he is CMA affiliated and he knows the job,” Valery said.

Ockunzzi acknowledged Taylor’s dedication to the city and his office, but questioned whether it was sound policy to proceed with the appointment before the board had had a chance to become fully apprised of his management style and ability to function in the new post while at the same time continuing his duties managing planning and zoning.

Recalling the circumstances which led to the surprise appointment of previous City Manager Steve Cottrell, Ockunzzi said, “I just don’t want any late afternoon calls saying that we’re going to put a last minute item on the agenda and the next thing is we’re hiring the guy.”

Cottrell’s tenure in office ended abruptly just before Christmas following a series of contract disputes and ultimate resignation.

Asked by Ockunzzi if he would be interested in applying for the permanent post, Taylor said, “I was thinking about that, yes.”

Taylor’s interim appointment became effective immediately following the 5-0 vote.
