Candidates announce intentions
Article published on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008
INDIAN ROCKS BEACH – Three seats on the City Commission will be decided in the March election. Mayor Bill Ockunzzi’s term will expire, as will the terms of Commissioners R.B. Johnson and Jose Coppen.

Several weeks ago, Johnson announced his intention to run for mayor. Ockunzzi filed his papers to run for re-election on Jan. 10.

Coppen has decided not to seek re-election. Reached at his home Tuesday, Coppen expressed his gratitude for the great privilege of having had the opportunity to serve Indian Rocks Beach.

“But now,” he said, “it’s time to step back and let others run.”

Also confirming their intention to run for the open IRB commission seats are Joanne “Cookie” Kennedy, who qualified Tuesday; Don Hause and Dan Torres.

Friday, Jan. 11, is the deadline for completing the process of qualification.

To qualify, candidates must present 20 resident signature cards, proof of having a campaign finance account and the name of the finance director, pay a fee of $51.58 for mayor-commissioner and $38.79 for commissioner, and declare candidacy using the official candidate application packet available at City Hall.

Revision, Jan. 10: Ockunzzi filed his papers to run for re-election on Jan. 10.
