INDIAN ROCKS BEACH – It’s water, water everywhere around here and no shortage of water-related issues.
First, there was the Beach Management Ad Hoc Committee that developed a plan to deal with the gulfside matters, and now the new Intracoastal Waterway Management Plan Ad Hoc Committee is set to address issues for that body of water on the other side of town.
The City Commission set up the new waterway committee back in August. On Tuesday night, it apointed to the new board no less than seven regular members and four alternates, effectively including all volunteers who applied.
The resolution originally establishing the committee called for only five members. But when 11 residents expressed interest, City Commissioner Jim Palamara suggested including all of them. Commissioner Jeremiah Carmody voiced his support for having as many different sections of town on the waterway represented on the new board. But the point was raised that too large a committee can inhibit progress. So applicant Janet Ward suggested the 7/4 committee make-up. Commissioners agreed and voted to amend the resolution to accommodate the expanded membership.
City Manager John Coffey announced that volunteers also are needed to fill vacancies on the Board of Adjustment and the Planning and Zoning Board.
Former IRB Civic Association president Linda Clark informed the commission that the community organization ceased to exist effective Dec. 31 after some 25 years. Clark said the demise was due to dwindling membership and changing demographics that decreased the pool of volunteers among the membership. She also said that the organization’s scholarship program had reached the end of its usefulness.
The Civic Association has turned over its budget of about $20,000 to a trust fund at St. Petersburg College for the current and future benefit of students from Indian Rocks Beach.
Mayor Bob DiNicola thanked Clark and the group.
“You guys will be thoroughly missed,” he said.
The commission voted to change its monthly meeting schedule. Effective March 1, commission meetings will be held on the first, second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. This change will allow city commissioners to attend the Pinellas Suncoast Fire and Rescue District board meetings on the third Tuesdays.
Another scheduling note: the commission workshop on the proposed dune preservation ordinance has been rescheduled from Tuesday, Feb.1, to Monday, Feb 21.
