Schoonover satisfied with contribution
Article published on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008
BELLEAIR BEACH – City Councilwoman Mary Schoonover will not run for re-election, saying she never intended to serve more than one term.

The independent video producer will be replaced on the City Council in March by another newcomer to city politics, David Dumville. Councilmen Mitch Krach and Richard Crowl filed for re-election and, without any opposition, they will automatically return to the council.

“I said during my campaign that I felt I could contribute to the city but would serve only one term, giving others a chance to contribute, too,” Schoonover said in a recent interview.

Schoonover is satisfied with her contribution, especially in three areas:

• The council has become less divisive and works together as a team on city issues;

• The city’s cable television production has grown with broadcast of city council meetings;

• When a ban on skimboarding on city beaches was proposed, the council listened to a room full of protesters and scrapped the idea.

Schoonover pointed to the smooth working relationship that has developed on the council during the past two years compared to frequent disagreements and factionalism among council members previously.

Schoonover is dismayed that Bright House Networks recently switched the government TV channel from Ch. 15 to Ch. 615. She said this has made it more difficult for local residents to access. But, she is still satisfied with the volunteer-led production that has been established.

A new face emerges

Dumville has lived in Belleair Beach for the past four years but has been a snowbird for more than 25 years. He brings a new face to local politics, having never delved into the fray before.

Asked why he chose to file for the council seat, the 52-year-old telecommunications engineering consultant said, “I want to serve the community in which I live, help support and maintain the community of Belleair Beach and its residential nature.”

Dumville said he wants also to ensure the financial responsibility within the community, and oversee building the new city hall.

Dumville is a 1979 graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
