HARBOR BLUFFS – On the evening of April 13, residents of Harbor Bluffs participated in their first luminary walk in support of the American Cancer Society.

Friends and neighbors walked throughout the community sharing their sadness, joy and commitment to fighting cancer. The walk promoted awareness of and raised money for the Suncoast Area American Cancer Society.

Thirty resident volunteers worked for several weeks to plan and coordinate the event. Street Leaders delivered packets of information about the local American Cancer Society office to every home in Harbor Bluffs. Purple ribbons were tied to mailboxes of all those who donated.

Pam Horvath, luminary chairperson, donated and coordinated the delivery of more than 1,500 luminary bags to Harbor Bluffs residents. The bags were personalized in memory, support, honor and celebration of those affected by cancer. There were hand-painted, stamped, colored and punched luminaries on every street in Harbor Bluffs.

“Reading the handwritten notes, poems and thoughts from the heart was very moving for those participating in the walk,” said Jane Marie Johnson, event chair. One resourceful resident, Betsy Schweitzer, posted cancer awareness facts on her luminaries.

The Suncoast American Cancer Society office offers more than 20 types of resources including support groups, information and referral services, smoking cessation and transportation programs.
