BELLEAIR – Big band music filled the halls and nostalgia abounded at the Belleview Biltmore Hotel’s Roaring ’20s party which was organized by Reclaiming Our Heritage and Friends of the Belleview Biltmore as part of Florida Heritage Month.
LC Swing Band belted out the music as if the Bernie Cummins’ Orchestra had come back for a repeat performance. They were the house band from 1924 until 1941 and one of the most popular bands in the nation at the time.
Jeannie Cummins, wife of Walter Cummins and the orchestra’s vocalist, was there along with several family members. Charlie Almeda, a sax player who played with all the great swing bands was on hand, as was Geri Turner, whose father was the golf course superintendent; she grew up on the Biltmore grounds.
Organizers would like to make Big Bands at the Belleview a regular affair.
