Patrick Covington, 5, receives his Lifesaving Award from PSF&RD Chief Russell Livernois, center, and Lt. Todd Grantham, representing the Indian Rocks Professional Firefighters Association, Local 3206.
INDIAN ROCKS BEACH – Pinellas Suncoast Fire & Rescue District has recognized the heroics of an extraordinary 5-year-old boy by honoring him with a Lifesaving Award.

Patrick Covington of Indian Rocks Beach was swimming in the family pool on June 17 when his 18-month-old sister, Marin, saw the small opening in the security fence around the pool.

Their mother, Liz, took her eyes off the pool for only a few seconds when Marin, seizing the opportunity, walked through the opening and directly into the deep end of the pool.

Patrick, who has been swimming like a fish since he was 2, swam to his sister and pulled her to the steps and out of the pool while yelling for help.

Members of Patrick’s family, beaming with pride, watched as PSF&RD Chief Russell Livernois presented the young man with his award during the June 19 meeting of the fire district board.

Members of the Indian Rocks Professional Firefighters Association, Local 3206, and the Indian Rocks Volunteer Firemen’s Association also presented this courageous youngster with a Target gift certificate, noting that Patrick performed an exceptional feat that deserves recognition.
