INDIAN ROCKS BEACH – Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a single-vehicle crash that occurred early Thursday morning on the Indian Rocks Bridge.
Deputies responded to the crash about 4:50 a.m., according to the sheriff’s report. The Jeep, driven by Robin Smith, 49, of Indian Rocks Beach was heading east bound over the bridge when it struck the concrete guardrail on the bridge and overturned coming to rest on the driver side on the drawbridge portion of the bridge.
An eyewitness who saw the crash told deputies that Smith had exited the wrecked vehicle and then walked to the south side of the bridge, climbed over the railing and jumped into the water.
Deputies and fire rescue units initiated a water rescue. Smith was found a short time later in the water by the Clearwater Fire Department. She was unresponsive. Smith was transported to a nearby dock and pronounced deceased.
