BELLEAIR – Pam Seefeld, Rotarian, registered pharmacist and owner of Botanical Resources recently spoke to the Belleair Rotary Club about how nutrition, physical activity and medications affect health.
Seefeld introduced the Rotarians to the major classes of phytonutrients. She connected those nutrients with words that the Rotarians would know, like onions, flax, broccoli, grain, etcetera. She explained how these plant nutrients may protect against disease through the mechanisms of antioxidants, enhancers of immune response, enhancement of cell-to-cell communication, alteration in estrogen metabolism, conversion to vitamin A, causing cancer cells to die, repairing of DNA damage caused by toxic exposure, and detoxification of carcinogens.
She then provided the Rotarians with her recipe for salad dressing: 1-2 garlic cloves and sea salt macerated in mortar and pestle to which is added juice of one lemon and two tablespoons of flaxseed oil.
