BELLEAIR BEACH – Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies are looking for a man who jumped off the Belleair Beach Causeway Bridge Tuesday night during a routine traffic stop.
According to the sheriff’s report, deputies stopped a 2005 Dark Blue Dodge Durango about 9:30 p.m. Sept. 24. The driver then exited the vehicle and jumped over the bridge’s railing.
The sheriff’s patrol units, flight section and Marine Unit actively searched for the suspect through the night, assisted by the U.S. Coast Guard and Florida Fish and Wildlife. The driver, described as a white male about 34 years old wearing blue jeans and a dark-colored T-shirt with possibly a tattoo at the base of his neck, was not found.
Deputies said the vehicle was stopped because it was speeding. The deputy making the stop asked the driver for identification and vehicle registration. While the deputy was checking the documents, the driver left the vehicle, ran to the bridge railing and jumped.
Deputies have developed various leads to the suspect’s whereabouts and are actively following up on them.
