Born and raised in Munford, Tenn., Menzel received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Florida International University. She then earned a doctorate in Education at Nova University in Fort Lauderdale.

“She was quite accomplished in everything she did,” said Menzel’s daughter, June Harrell of Port St. Lucie.

Her first job was as secretary to the president of the Piggly Wiggly supermarket chain. During World War II, she was a stereotypical Rosie the Riveter at a Boeing B-29 bomber plant in Memphis.

After the war, Menzel held various medical-related positions at the University of Tennessee, hospitals and medical offices. She developed the first transistorized bedside EEG system for 11 Dade County hospitals. In the late 1960s, she headed the electroencephalography lab at Morton Plant Hospital.

In addition to her contributions to medicine, Menzel will be remembered for her work in the social services. She was a guardian ad litem for the court and in private practice, a child custody evaluator, a family mediator in Pinellas and Pasco counties, a family advocate and a counselor for the Belleair Montessori Academy and Women on the Way.

“I knew Marion quite well,” former Belleair Mayor Connie Mudano said. “I knew her as a family advocate in the family court and also knew her through the Rotary … Marion did a lot of work with Judge Dee Anna Farnell in the family court.”

Menzel was a member of the Professional Academy of Custody Evaluation and was certified as an expert in the areas of physical and sexual abuse, neglect and the dynamics of family behavior by the 6th Circuit Court for Pinellas and Pasco counties. She was a state-certified college instructor who served as an assistant professor and department head at the Miami-Dade Community College medical campus.

Her numerous affiliations include MENSA, Questors and the American Southern and Western EEG Societies, and she held the No. 3 membership certificate at the Canadian EEG Society. She is listed in Who’s Who in the South.

In addition to Harrell, Menzel is survived by another daughter, Bonnie Jorgensen of Neptune Beach; a son, John F. Roark of Garberville, Calif.; four grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and one great-great-granddaughter.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, 701 Orange Ave., Clearwater. Menzel’s ashes will be buried next to those of her second husband, Navy dentist Cmdr. Claude E. Adkins, at a private family ceremony in Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made toward the $500 cost of planting an oak tree in Menzel’s memory in Largo Central Park. Checks should be made payable to the City of Largo and be mailed to June Harrell, 6823 Wadsworth Terrace, Port St. Lucie, FL 34952.
