Sarasota man held on $1.4 million bail
Article published on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2007 |
BELLEAIR BLUFFS – A Sarasota man was arrested Oct. 26 on drug trafficking charges and prescription fraud.
Shawn D. Horton, 38, is being held in the Pinellas County Jail on 28 counts of various drug charges of obtaining by fraud and trafficking in hydrocodone.
It is believed that the suspect allegedly passed fraudulent prescriptions in at least six other counties.
Horton is being held at the county jail in lieu of $1.47 million bail.
Pinellas County Sheriff’s detectives said the suspect was arrested at Walgreen’s Pharmacy, 103 Indian Rocks Road. Detectives said the suspect had been passing fraudulent prescriptions for more than a year.
Deputies said the investigation began on Oct. 1 after another Pinellas County pharmacist became suspicious of a prescription that had been filled two days earlier. It allegedly was later determined that the prescription was forged. The suspect allegedly filled and refilled prescriptions at pharmacies throughout the six-county area.
Deputies staked out the Belleair Bluffs pharmacy and arrested Horton at about 6:30 p.m. He allegedly had about 100 forged prescriptions in his possession.
Detectives said the prescriptions were organized in such a way that he would know when to fill a prescription at particular pharmacies.
The investigation continues in DeSoto, Hillsborough, Lee, Manatee, Pasco and Sarasota counties.
