Hometown soldier joins Veterans Day boat parade

INDIAN ROCKS BEACH – The Indian Rocks Beach Homeowners Association announced that its boat won third place in the Nov. 8 Madeira Beach Veterans Day boat parade.
The boat is owned by John Pickens.
Among those on board were Pickens’ son-in-law, Staff Sgt. Mikey Gibbons, who lives in Indian Rocks Beach, and others from the Air Force’s 820th Security Forces Group of the 824th squadron at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia.
Gibbons has been deployed on four tours to Iraq in the past four years and just recently returned from his longest deployment.
The parade began at the American Legion Post 273 in Madeira Beach, 600 American Legion Drive and wound south to the Treasure Island Bridge and back, finishing at the Holiday Isle Elks Lodge.
The opening ceremony began on docks of the Legion Post 273 with Pearl Harbor Survivors, U.S. Coast Guard grand marshals, raising of the colors, and the national anthem.
