Clearwater Library celebrates 100 years

CLEARWATER - Clearwater City Council held the first of two public hearing for the city’s fiscal 2017 budget on Sept. 15 at city hall.

The proposed $468 million budget will keep the city’s millage rate at 5.1550 mills for its eighth consecutive year and reflects an increase of $27 million across all city operations.

CLEARWATER - The stretch of Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard/State Route 60 from Damascus Road to Highland Avenue will be under construction through the summer of 2017.

This is a Florida Department of Transportation construction project that will involve intermittent lane closures and lane shifts.

The roadway will be resurfaced, and repairs to drainage pipes and sidewalks where needed will be made. Construction activities and lane closures will occur during daytime and nighttime hours. Access to driveways and side streets will be maintained. Drivers should allow themselves more time traveling along this route during the construction period.

CLEARWATER - Everyone can play a role in keeping Clearwater bright and beautiful. Clearwater police and code enforcement officers have noted recent increases in the number of cases of illegal dumping on vacant lots and residential properties throughout the city. Innocent property owners bear the expense of having to rid properties of trash, construction debris, appliances, grass clippings and tree trimmings that are intentionally littered onto their properties.

CLEARWATER - Clearwater Marine Aquarium looked to the future on Sept. 12 as it broke ground on a $50 million expansion plan for the decades-old facility.

The overhaul will include the development of a three-story, 437 parking-spot garage, two four-story educational and guest buildings and a new 1.4 million gallon dolphin habitat with six connecting pools, which will replace the aquarium’s current 300,000-gallon habitat.

The proposed garage will be constructed from base elevation to 34 feet high and the two educational and guest buildings will be 47 feet high.

CLEARWATER - Community park improvements and an expansion of city emergency infrastructure top the list of future capital improvement projects for the city of Clearwater.

City Council members tentatively approved a revised Penny for Pinellas project list for the fiscal years 2016-17 through 2019-20 during a workshop on Sept. 12 at city hall.

The revised budget comes in at $42.848 million to fund capital projects under the Penny for Pinellas project.

CLEARWATER - The Clearwater Threshers have set the second-highest attendance total ever for the club, with 181,594 guests passing through the gates of Bright House Field during the Florida State League season. There were 67 openings this season for an average attendance of 2,710.

The 2016 total exceeded the 177,297 fans to attend Threshers games in 2012 over 69 openings. The Threshers all-time single-season record is 195,063 set in 2014 when all 70 scheduled openings were met.

“The Threshers continued attendance records are the result of a great Threshers front office staff, a talented Phillies minor league system and tremendous fans in Clearwater and the surrounding area,” said Clearwater Threshers General Manager John Timberlake. “Our fans continue to embrace both the team and the ballpark and we cannot thank them enough for their support.”

Driving was something that she loved, so the Lord decided that Heaven needed a chauffeur and called Judith C. Pippenger (Meyers) Hotz to be with him on Aug. 12, 2016, at the age of 74.

Born in Belleview, Illinois, she taught fifth grade in Ohio, but chose to build a life in Florida. This is where her five children were born.

After many years in Florida where she was a Girl Scout Leader, Lunch Room Lady and School Bus Driver at Grace Lutheran, U.S. Census worker and a driver for St. Pete Moving (Mayflower), she chose to relocate to Decaturville, Tennessee where she lived until her passing.

CLEARWATER - The Clearwater Public Library System will celebrate 100 years of operation with a weeklong celebration across each of its five locations.

The festivities will celebrate the library’s long history in Clearwater and will feature lectures, music and lots of birthday cake.

According to the city’s website, Clearwater Library System had its earliest beginnings in 1911 when the then Clearwater Library Association opened a subscription library. By 1915, the city had approved the creation and maintenance of a free public library. The Carnegie Foundation approved a request for $10,000 to build the permanent library location.

CLEARWATER - Clearwater City Manager Bill Horne gave his annual state of the city address last week before council members at city hall.

Horne touted the city’s accomplishments during the 2015-16 fiscal year that operated on a budget of nearly $441 million.

CLEARWATER - Inc. magazine, a national business and industry growth monthly publication based in New York City, recently ranked Clearwater No. 1 in the nation for the number of private businesses rated in the magazine’s annual Inc. 500 list.

The ranking showcases the number of fast-growing businesses in Clearwater, relative to the city’s population size, according to the magazine’s September 2016 edition.
