CLEARWATER – The Clearwater City Council Jan. 16 unanimously gave Bill Morris, the city’s Marine and Aviation Director, the go-ahead to apply for a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission grant that will enable the city to replace 43 of its boat slips adjacent to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium with a 200-foot floating dock.
The dock will facilitate the dropping off and picking up of passengers and make it easier for disabled boaters to disembark from their vessels.
The council also unanimously approved a Memorandum of Understanding that will allow the Tampa Bay Veterans Alliance to construct a memorial in the city-owned Crest Lake Park to honor the veterans who have served in America’s wars since 1917.
The project will be built in two phases, with the city and the Veterans Alliance splitting the $1.3 million cost.
The first phase will cost $150,000 for each party and the second phase will cost them each $500,000. But if the Veterans Alliance is unable to raise its first-phase payment of $150,000 by Jan. 1, 2016, the Memorandum of Understanding will expire and the deal will be off.
