CLEARWATER – Clearwater Police charged a man with DUI and child neglect for allegedly having his son in the car while intoxicated, a police report said.
Clearwater police found David Timothy Higgins, 26, of Largo intoxicated behind the wheel with his 4-year-old son in the back seat, the report said. Higgins had pulled into a Wendy’s at 900 S. Missouri Ave. about 10:30 p.m. on Feb. 2, shortly after the Super Bowl had ended, to order food. The manager at the restaurant noticed that he was intoxicated and had a child in the back seat. She asked him to pull his car over while she waited on his food to cook. Instead, she called Clearwater Police.
Officers responding noticed a strong odor of alcohol coming from Higgins. His eyes were bloodshot, his speech was slurred and he failed several sobriety tests, the report said. He told officers he had been watching the Super Bowl and had consumed five beers. When asked why he was driving with a child in the car, he said that he didn’t think he was intoxicated.
Higgins was released from the Pinellas County Jail on a $2,500 bond.
