CLEARWATER – Clearwater city staff presented council members with a first draft of possible projects for the next round of Pennies for Pinellas funding during a workshop Feb. 13 at City Hall.

Since its approval in 1989 and again in 1997, Clearwater has benefitted from the sales tax levy with an approximate $210 million, which has funded a number of projects, including the Memorial Causeway Bridge, Bright House (now Spectrum) Stadium, at least five fire stations, Ross Norton Complex, Countryside and the Main Clearwater libraries, Pier 60, the Long Center and downtown streetscaping.

Other planned projects for the remainder of the current 10-year cycle include the consolidation of the Eastside and the St. Petersburg College libraries, Countryside Fire Station, Clearwater Beach Fire Station, Lakeview Fire Station, Crest Lake Park improvements, Morningside Recreation Center replacement and additional downtown streetscaping.

According to an estimate by Pinellas County, should Pennies for Pinellas be approved for an additional decade, Clearwater is expected to receive approximately $141 million over the 10-year span.

Clearwater City Manager Bill Horne presented city council with a list of recommended projects to consider for the next cycle.

Those projects include:

• Utilities infrastructure, with an estimated cost of $20 million.

• Major League Baseball training facilities, with an estimated cost of $7.5 million.

• Second Century Clearwater projects, with an estimated cost of $8 million.

• Fire Engines/Rescue vehicles, with an estimated cost of $8.5 million.

• Police vehicles, with an estimated cost of $1.7 million.

• Police District III (Countryside sub station), with an estimated cost of $5.5 million.

• Neighborhood and community parks renovations, with an estimated cost of $3.5 million.

• Youth sports fields renovations, with an estimated cost of $5 million.

• Recreation trails, with an estimated cost of $2.5 million.

• McMullen tennis complex expansion, with an estimated cost of $2 million.

• Environmental park improvements, with an estimated cost of $1.5 million.

• Beach marina upgrades, with an estimated cost of $15 million.

• Public Works complex, with an estimated cost of $12.3 million.

• City Hall, with an estimated cost of $6.3 million.

• Downtown parking garage, with an estimated cost of $10.5 million.

• Sand Key Bridge replacement fund, with an estimated cost of $30 million.

Council members accepted the list but will further discuss it during a meeting later this month.
