CLEARWATER – Clearwater Police identified the person who called 911 to falsely report a school shooting at Belleair Elementary on Feb. 26. According to a police Facebook report, the caller was a 7-year-old first-grader at the school. Detectives say he called 911 nine times, two of them generating police responses – one being the school shooting and the other being a false report of a dead person in the road.
Belleair Elementary in Clearwater was in lockdown Feb. 26 after Clearwater Police received a single 911 call about a potential shooting at the school. Numerous police officers responded to the report around 3 p.m. and conducted a thorough, room-by-room search of the school.
Police reported that the lockdown had been lifted about 4:20 p.m. after it was determined that there was no shooting, shooter or gun and that the call was a hoax.
Charges for misuse of 911 were referred to the State Attorney’s office. Clearwater police say the boy will likely be placed in a diversionary program.
