CLEARWATER – Clearwater police reported Thursday night that “the great shoe caper has been solved.”
“The wrestling shoe which walked away (with some help) from Hogan's Beach Shop on Sunday has been returned,” stated a post made about 9 p.m. on Clearwater PD’s Facebook page.
Police said the woman who took the shoe called the store Thursday to say she did something stupid and wanted to return the shoe. She's back in Michigan, but the shoe was still in Pinellas County with people she had met while in town. Those people brought the shoe back to the shop Thursday night.
No charges have been filed yet, and the investigation continues.
Clearwater Police announced on Wednesday evening details of an investigation into the theft of an expensive piece of memorabilia – an autographed wrestling shoe once worn by Hulk Hogan taken from his shop on Clearwater Beach.
According to the media release, a heavyset white female in her 50s took the shoe about 5:20 p.m. Sunday, March 16. The shoe is valued at $5,500.
Four white females – possibly from Michigan on spring break - came into Hogan’s Beach Shop at 5:16 p.m. Four minutes later, a large statue of Hogan fell over outside the premises, and store workers were temporarily distracted. That’s when the theft occurred.
Employees did not know the shoe was missing until Tuesday evening when they checked store security cameras and saw the theft.
