CLEARWATER – Clearwater Gas System, a department of the city of Clearwater, celebrates 90 years of service this year. Chartered in 1923, Clearwater Gas System began by providing manufactured gas to customers using coal, coke and other products.
During this era, trains delivered the materials to the present site at 400 N. Myrtle Ave. Original Clearwater neighborhoods receiving gas service included Harbor Oaks, Belleair and the North Greenwood area. The first several hundred customers used gas primarily for heating, cooking and lighting their homes using a tin coin meter.
Underground piped natural gas transmission lines reached the Clearwater area from Texas in the late 1950s, which helped the gas company grow their business to service customers in both Pinellas and Pasco counties. Today, Clearwater Gas System serves more than 20,000 natural and propane gas customers.
“We currently service a total of 20 municipalities in both Pinellas and Pasco counties, which is a vast service territory compared to our humble beginnings,” said Chuck Warrington, managing director. “Our focus is on our customers who love the gas energy savings. We are equally grateful for our awesome team of gas employees who are committed to providing a superior level of customer satisfaction.”
