CLEARWATER – A Clearwater man is facing charges after his car crashed head-on into a truck Friday night in the area of Overbook and Douglas avenues in unincorporated Clearwater.
According to Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team, Deputy Martin Guzman was on routine patrol about 11:15 p.m. May 23 when he saw a 2012 Ford Fusion being driven in a “reckless manner.” Guzman turned on his lights and siren to make a traffic stop.
The driver of the Fusion then began to make a wide right turn onto Douglas Avenue from Overbrook Avenue, driving into oncoming southbound traffic. The Fusion hit a 2010 Chevy S10 pickup truck head-on.
The driver and passenger of the Fusion exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Guzman pursued on foot and caught the driver, Matthew J. Bunch. The passenger has not been identified.
Two passengers of the truck were transported to a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The driver, Kimberly Riggien, 43, of Clearwater was not injured.
Bunch also was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, but has since been released and taken to the Pinellas County Jail without further incident. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injury, fleeing and eluding, trafficking in hydromorphone and resisting arrest without violence. He was released on $70,000 bond Saturday morning.
