FCAT releases third graders scores

CLEARWATER The Florida Department of Education has released the third graders scores on the reading and mathematics Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. Pinellas County had mixed results.
The tests are scored on a five-point scale, with five being the highest, and students need at least a three or higher to be deemed passing. Third-graders need at least a score of three on the reading test to pass to fourth grade. Some students who fail have the opportunity to make it up with extra study and a re-take the test in the summer.
Pinellas County as a whole remained the same as last year in reading, with 72 percent of students scoring at least a three. Statewide, 72 percent of students scored a three or higher in reading, down from 71 percent last year.
Scores went down slightly in math, dropping to 77 percent of students passing from 78 percent in 2008. Statewide, scores were up to 78 percent from 76 percent in 2008.
Clearwater
Reading scores were mixed in Clearwater, with eight schools having more students score a three or higher compared to last year, one school staying the same, and four schools dropping. The results are as follows, shown in percentages of students who score a three or higher in reading:
Belcher Elementary rose to 79 percent from 74 percent in 2008
Belleair Elementary rose to 66 percent from 51 percent
Eisenhower Elementary leapt to 80 percent from 54 percent
Frontier Elementary rose to 80 percent from 79 percent
High Point Elementary rose to 56 percent from 55 percent
Kings Highway Elementary fell to 51 percent from 56 percent
Leila Davis Elementary rose to 80 percent from 78 percent
McMullen-Booth Elementary rose to 84 percent from 81 percent
North Ward Elementary fell to 73 percent from 76 percent
Plumb Elementary remained the same at 87 percent
Ponce De Leon Elementary leapt to 68 percent from 58 percent
Sandy Lane Elementary fell to 51 percent from 63 percent
Skyview Elementary dropped to 59 percent from 70 percent
Math scores in Clearwater were also mixed, with eight schools getting a higher percentage of students who scored a three or above, and five schools who dropped in percentage. The results are as follows:
Belcher Elementary fell to 80 percent from 86 percent in 2008
Belleair Elementary rose to 74 percent from 70 percent
Eisenhower Elementary rose to 79 percent from 74 percent
Frontier Elementary rose to 90 percent from 88 percent
High Point Elementary leapt to 73 percent from 63 percent
Kings Highway Elementary rose to 71 percent from 64 percent
Leila Davis Elementary rose to 91 percent from 88 percent
McMullen-Booth Elementary fell to 88 percent from 90 percent
North Ward Elementary dropped to 64 percent from 87 percent
Plumb Elementary rose to 94 percent from 89 percent
Ponce De Leon Elementary rose to 73 percent from 70 percent
Sandy Lane Elementary fell to 55 percent from 67 percent
Skyview Elementary fell to 76 percent from 80 percent
Dunedin
Third-graders in Dunedin scored slightly lower in reading as compared to 2008, with two schools getting lower percentages of students scoring a three or higher, one school remaining the same, and one school getting a higher percentage. The results are as follows:
Curtis Fundamental Elementary fell to 88 percent from 94 percent in 2008
Dunedin Elementary fell to 64 percent from 78 percent
Garrison-Jones Elementary remained the same at 86 percent
San Jose Elementary rose to 87 percent from 81 percent
In math, two Dunedin schools had a higher percentage of students scoring a three or higher on the test, and two schools had a lower percentage of students who passed. The results are as follows:
Curtis Fundamental Elementary rose to 96 percent from 94 percent
Dunedin Elementary fell to 71 percent from 84 percent
Garrison-Jones Elementary fell to 84 percent from 91 percent
San Jose Elementary rose to 86 percent from 84 percent
