CLEARWATER – A Clearwater man was charged with DUI after his car was struck by a marked Pinellas County Sheriff’s cruiser about 12:40 a.m. Sunday, June 29, at the intersection of Belcher Road and Bell Cheer Drive in Clearwater.
According to investigators with the sheriff’s Major Accident Investigation Team, Deputy Steven Wolcott, 41, was headed home from an off-duty detail in his 2011 Crown Victoria marked cruiser. The deputy was traveling was northbound on Belcher Road, attempting a westbound (or left) turn onto Bell Cheer Drive just before the crash.
Christian Brinsko, 22, was traveling southbound on Belcher Road in the median lane in his 2005 Saturn Ion. Deputies said Brinsko was traveling with no headlights and that only parking lights were on. Wolcott did not see the vehicle, started his left hand turn and struck the driver’s side rear wheel area of the vehicle.
Brinsko was transported to Morton Plant Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released. Following release from the hospital, deputies determined that Brinsko was impaired and he was arrested for DUI and DUI property damage. He was booked into the Pinellas County Jail. Bond was set at $1,000.
Wolcott was not injured. The cruiser sustained damage to the left front area.
Deputies said narcotics appear to be a factor. According to jail records, Brinsko has two prior arrests this year for marijuana possession.
