CLEARWATER – Clearwater’s solid waste department has begun installing 34 Big Belly Solar and Smart Belly Combination kiosks in highly visible areas around the downtown corridor and the beach.
The two-station kiosks consist of one solar compactor for trash and litter and one recycling station.
The kiosks will be the first public space recycling offered by the city. The stations will provide patrons to downtown and the beach the chance to save valuable resources and reduce waste. Recyclables accepted are plastics #1-7, glass, mixed paper, newspaper, aluminum, and steel cans.
The kiosks get all of their energy from the sun and should help keep Clearwater streets and sidewalks clean. The litter containers compact trash when necessary, providing a compaction ratio of about 3 to 1. The new system allows for remote monitoring and data reporting to help reduce labor and fuel costs by decreasing the number of collections required.
