CLEARWATER – The Clearwater Public Library System is planning some fun, challenging events for its annual 2012 Teen Read Week on Sunday, Oct. 14 to Saturday, Oct. 20. Activities include the following:
• Short story contest – Teens may submit a short story up to 1,000 words in length along with a completed entry form to any branch library. There will be two judging categories: Grades 6 to 8 and grades 9 to 12. Topics should be personal anecdotes or original fiction and may not contain offensive language or subject matter. Gift cards will be awarded as prizes. Entry forms are available at all branches. Call 562-4970 or visit www.myclearwater.com/cpl.
• Book giveaway – Wednesday, Oct. 17, teens may drop in to the Teen Room at the Main Library, 100 N. Osceola Ave. to pick up a free book.
• Blind date with a book – Sunday, Oct. 14 to Saturday, Oct. 19, teens are invited to have a “blind date” with a book at the Main Library. Selected volumes will be wrapped in paper so participants won’t know what book they are choosing. Teens can get to know their “dates” until Wednesday, Oct. 31, when they can get a reward for taking a chance on a mystery book.
• Teen Read Week party – Sunday, Oct. 20, Read Week will wrap up at the East Branch Library, 2251 Drew St., with a teen get-together. Teens may attend dressed as their favorite book character or without a costume. The first 50 guests will receive free books.
CLEARWATER – Clearwater Public Libraries remind the public that now that school is back in session, that libraries are effective tools that lead to success in school. Parents are encouraged to see that students obtain library cards.
Youth Services librarians at all five branches are available to help students with Internet access, online research and other tools such as various databases, the Florida Electronic Library, the FCAT Explorer, language learning tools, books, e-books and homework help.
The libraries are also a great source for social activities for all age groups and provide challenging, lifelong learning opportunities for all Clearwater citizens.
