CLEARWATER – Two Clearwater men were charged Oct. 4 after Clearwater police responded to the Ross Norton Apartments on a call about a vehicle in which several suspects were waiving guns.
Police responded, and as the officer exited the cruiser, the suspect vehicle drove directly at him, the report said. The officer tried to jump out of the way but was struck by the passenger mirror and passenger side of the vehicle, resulting in minor injuries.
Officers then began to pursue, ending at Druid Road and U.S. 19 when the suspect vehicle crashed. The driver, identified as Derrick Scudder, and two other males bailed from the vehicle and fled on foot. K-9 units tracked the suspects to the area of Lowe’s at Clearwater Mall where the Pinellas Sheriff’s Office’s Eagle helicopter spotted the two suspects on the roof. Officers called Clearwater Fire and Rescue to gain access to the roof using a ladder truck and took the suspects into custody.
Multiple guns were found in the vehicle. Detectives were still working to identify a third suspect.
Scudder, 23, was charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell/manufacture/deliver; driving with license permanently revoked; possession of MDMA; possession of cocaine; grand theft firearm; burglary of an occupied structure; fleeing or eluding with a high speed and wanton disregard; felonious possession of a firearm; aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer; and leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage. He was being held without bail at the Pinellas County Jail.
Barry Miller, 25, was charged with burglary of an occupied structure. He was being held in the Pinellas County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bond.
