SAFETY HARBOR – Pinellas County Sheriff’s Major Accident Investigation Team are looking into the circumstances that led to a vehicle versus pedestrian crash that killed a Safety Harbor man about 7:34 p.m. Oct. 25.
According to investigators, Gilbert L. Greene, 68, and his wife Brenda Greene, 66, were crossing State Road 580 south to north after they left Sun Grove’s Ice Cream Shop. Deputies said the couple crossed the eastbound lanes to the median, but as they continued across the westbound lanes, a Ford Ranger driven by Mark G. Cavanagh, 52, of Clearwater struck Gilbert Greene.
Greene was transported by ambulance to Mease Countryside Hospital for treatment, where he was pronounced deceased at about 8:04 p.m. Brenda Greene was not injured.
Deputies say neither speed nor impairment appear to be a factor in the crash.
Mr. Greene was carrying the family dog in his arms as they crossed the road. After Greene was struck Rudi, an 8-year-old miniature Daschund ran away. Deputies reported Oct. 26, that Rudi had been found. A citizen saw the dog walking near Horizon Bay assisted living facility, 3141 McMullen Booth Road during the morning hours. The dog was still dragging its red leash. The citizen secured the dog and called the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded and returned the dog to Brenda Greene.
