Fire department honors staff members

SAFETY HARBOR – The awards ceremony for Safety Harbor Fire Rescue was at VFW Post 10093 with Fire Marshal Richard Brock and Company Officer Fred Dampier as masters of ceremony for the event.

Brock awarded District Chief Training Officer Joe Accetta with the 2006 Fire Officer of the Year Award. Accetta joined the Safety Harbor Fire Department in 1981 and began to climb the ladder of the department, first by becoming a driver/engineer, then training officer and captain.

Fire Fighter of the Year for 2006 is David Lock, recognized for his outstanding contributions in his role as a fire medic. Since joining the Safety Harbor Fire Department in 1998, Lock began working on his days off at the office of the medical director and now serves as quality assurance manager.

Distinguished Service Awards honorees, recognized for their exceptional contributions include, Julie Yaeger for her role as public information officer for the department; DC Ed Martens for CERT; DC Phil Vozza and Fire Fighter Russ Cortese for their dedication to the CPR program; Fire Marshal Brock, Fire Medic Mike Pounds and DC Tom Dundon for the special needs program, and volunteers Chuck Russell and Tammy Parker.

Special honors were awarded to four Safety Harbor Fire Rescue members who helped save the life of a Safety Harbor resident in cardiac arrest: Fire Medic Tom Peters, who received a Meritorious Service Award for his role in resuscitating the patient with a defibrillator; Captain Ray Duke, Fire Fighters John Weston and Dave Pacheco who received a Unit Citation Award for assisting on the emergency call.

The Safety Harbor Fire Rescue also was recognized for earning the Life Safety Achievement Award by the Residential Fire Safety Institute.
