Obituary: Jean Duke Southmayd

CLEARWATER – Jean Duke Southmayd, 85, died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006 at Encore Senior Village.
Born in Washington D.C. on Nov. 11, 1920, Mrs. Southmayd relocated to Harbor Bluffs in 1980 with her late husband of 52 years, John Pixley Southmayd.
A fifth-generation Washingtonian, Mrs. Southmayd attended George Washington University, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Her other memberships in the Washington area included All Saints Episcopal Church, Congressional Country Club, Florence Crittenden Circle, Sumner Garden Club and The Town Club.
During World War II, Mrs. Southmayd proudly served as a Gray Lady at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington.
Locally, she had been a member of Episcopal Church of the Ascension, Belleair Country Club and the Clearwater Panhellenic Alumni Association.
She is survived by her six children: Carol Marquardt of Belleair; Susan Fry of North Potomac, Md.; John P. Southmayd Jr. of Annapolis, Md.; Jeffrey Duke Southmayd of Ocean Hammock, Fla.; Brian Lee Southmayd of Palm Harbor and Charlotte Mary (Chary) Southmayd of Largo; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, Feb. 4, 9 a.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church in Indian Rocks Beach.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations in Mrs. Southmayd's memory be made to the Episcopal Church or the SPCA Tampa Bay in Largo.
