Clearwater soldier receives final honors

CLEARWATER – Arturo Huerta-Cruz, 23, was laid to rest April 22 under some oak trees at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Clearwater.
Huerta-Cruz, a chemical operations specialist was killed April 14 when his patrol was attacked with an explosive device near Truz, Iraq. Two other soldiers were injured in the attack.
He was assigned to the 10th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (light infantry), Fort Drum, N.Y., according to the Department of Defense.
Huerta-Cruz enlisted in the Army in May 2006 and completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., according to a Fort Drum news release. He deployed to Iraq with the 3,500 soldier Warrior Brigade in November 2007 and served in the Kirkuk area of northern Iraq.
He earned the Purple Heart, Army Achievement Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
He is survived by his parents, also of Clearwater.
