CLEARWATER – An 8-year-old girl was recovering Monday from severe burns suffered when her party dress caught on fire on April 22.
About a dozen family and friends had gathered at James and Susan Crawford’s home in the 1800 block of Northwood Drive in an unincorporated part of the city to celebrate the eighth birthday for their daughter, Sadie.
Sadie was proudly wearing a frilly, special birthday dress.
At about 10:30 p.m., Sadie climbed onto a bathroom counter to reach a bandage. She didn’t realize that her dress brushed an aromatic candle, setting the “princess-like” dress on fire, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office report.
Sadie ran, screaming, from the bathroom into an adjoining bedroom where her father and an uncle burned their own hands trying to put out the flames and to remove the burning dress.
Firefighters treated all three victims at the scene and Sadie was flown to Tampa General Hospital. She was listed Monday in good condition, according to hospital spokesman Ellen Fiss who said the child was in the hospital’s Children’s Medical Center.
James Crawford and the child’s uncle were both treated and released for minor burns at Tampa General where they were taken by ambulance.
The sheriff’s report said Sadie sustained first- and second-degree burns on 10 percent of her body and was expected to fully recover.
The child’s parents have declined interviews with reporters.
Investigators have concluded the incident was an accident and no charges are anticipated, according to the Sheriff’s report.
