CLEARWATER – The City Council on May 15 unanimously granted the owners’ request that the Marriott Hotel on Sand Key be granted a “tourist” zoning.
A settlement stipulation which expired in October 2006 had left the 4.8-acre property without a valid zoning designation, and the city’s Community Development Board had recommended the “tourist” zoning.
The hotel’s attorney, Ed Armstrong, had Ethel Hammer, a land-use planning expert from Tampa, address the council. She explained that “tourist” zoning is the only zoning consistent with the city’s Comprehensive Plan for the parcel, is the only zoning appropriate for the parcel’s current use, is the only zoning that will keep the parcel from being nonconforming and is the only zoning that is consistent with nearby properties.
“I’m going to support this because I believe that (“tourist”) is what it is and what it should be,” Mayor Frank Hibbard said.
