CLEARWATER – Noting that forecasters are predicting a busy hurricane season this year, Mayor Frank Hibbard recently proclaimed the opening of Hurricane Awareness Month in Clearwater.

“Prepare for the worst and hope for the best,” Hibbard advised residents.

Beach parking garage closer to becoming reality
CLEARWATER – For years, city officials have talked of the need for a municipal parking garage on Clearwater Beach. In March, they instructed City Attorney Pam Akin to prepare a Request for Proposals from real estate brokers interested in helping the city locate and buy an appropriate site for a 300-space public garage on South Clearwater Beach. Chase Real Estate Inc. was judged to be the best of the seven applicants. On May 15, the City Council unanimously voted to have city officials enter into contract negotiations with Chase.

City settles with injured officer
CLEARWATER – The City Council has unanimously agreed to settle the workers’ compensation claim of George Agovino III for $30,000. While working as a Clearwater police officer on October 15, 2007, Agovino was involved in an automobile accident that was not his fault. He received neck, back, elbow and wrist injuries. His physician has indicated that the neck injury will likely prevent him from continuing his career as a police officer. He has applied for a work-related disability pension, but the settlement will not affect the pension.
