Kitten killer arrested after family argument
Article published on Monday, July 21, 2008
CLEARWATER – A Clearwater man was arrested twice in two days for incidents related to an argument with his adult stepson, according to Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies.

According to a report from the sheriff’s office, James Patrick Gilley, 48, was arrested for domestic battery on Saturday, July 19. Gilley also was arrested on Sunday, July 20, for animal cruelty.

Deputies were summoned to a private residence on Pine Street in unincorporated Clearwater about 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, the report said. Deputies were told that Gilley had been arguing with his stepson, 21, and that Gilley has allegedly struck his stepson in the head.

Deputies said they also were told that during the argument, Gilley had picked up a kitten and thrown it on the ground or against a car several times.

The kitten, which was believed to have been seriously injured or killed, could not be found when deputies arrived, however deputies did find evidence to support the allegation.

Just before 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, deputies were again called to the home where two dead kittens had been discovered near a storage shed.

Deputies say both of the kittens had died as a result of obvious trauma inflicted in a manner consistent with information provided by witnesses on Saturday.

Gilley, who had posted bond following his arrest the day before, had returned home before deputies arrived. Deputies arrested him again, on two counts of cruelty to animals.

Gilley made no statements to deputies regarding the dead kittens, the report said. The remaining kittens were removed from the property by the stepson, who told deputies he was moving to a new address in Pinellas County.

The investigation continues.
