The winning team poses with its trophy following the Red, White, and Blue ballroom dancing match July 14, at the Starlight Dance Club in Dunedin.
DUNEDIN – Contestants from around the Tampa Bay area gathered for the Red, White, and Blue ballroom dancing match on July 14 at the Starlight Dance Club.

Participants age 11 to the senior citizens of 80 and older showed amazing talent and grace and all hoped their team would come out on top.

From 7:30 to 11 p.m. the floor was shaking, and the spectators shouted their approval. Competitors danced the waltz, foxtrot, cha cha, hustle, mambo and salsa.

The judge, Tina Killick, 29, Tampa, revealed the winner only moments after the last dance ended.

“We worked hard, and even though this has been one of the largest matches, we came out on top,” said Mike Luciano, 41, Clearwater.

The first place team had an overall score of 98.5. The Starlight Dance Club, owned by Luciano and Judy Davy, 39, of Clearwater, travels and competes in many different areas, and worked extremely hard to take the trophy from the winner of the last match, Vicki’s Ballroom, which came in a close second with a score of 98.

“Ballroom dancing is an excellent form of exercise, and a great way to meet new people,” said Davy.

“Even though it is always great to win, our students did their best. Dancing is all about fun and learning to improve,” said Vicki Seaton, 45, Clearwater.

In third place was First Dance studio, with a score of 97.5.

Each competitor has a choice in competing in all six dances, and has the chance to make a perfect score in any of them.

Two students came out with perfect scores in all their dances, both from Safety Harbor: Marsha Rosenberg, 46, and Eleen Potak, 45.
