CLEARWATER – The man wanted for first-degree murder in connection with a home invasion that turned deadly has been caught, police say.
Joseph Lee Simmons, 21, was arrested in Carrollton, Ga. after police detectives recently got word that he had fled the state and was in the vicinity of Carrolton.
The local police agency, the Clearwater police and the U.S. Marshall worked together to apprehend Simmons who was taken into custody without incident on Monday morning, said Clearwater public safety spokeswoman Elizabeth Daly-Watts.
Police say Simmons, who has been charged with first-degree murder, burst into a home at 1307 Flagler Drive in the middle of the night on Sept. 18. During the robbery, two people were shot, including Joseph Shaw who died.
Up to three individuals are wanted in connection with the robbery, which police say was drug-related, so investigators are looking for additional suspects.
