Accident, fuel spill force road closure
Article published on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2007 |
CLEARWATER A two-vehicle accident sent one Clearwater man to the hospital and the county's HazMat team to the crash scene to clean up a fuel spill.
A 2006 Mercedes, driven in the southbound lanes of North Hercules Avenue by Keith Gregory Grubb, 36 veered into the path of a flatbed truck going north.
Grubb was seriously injured in the Tuesday morning accident. The driver of the truck, Clearwater resident Edmond Prince, 64, was not hurt in the 8:30 a.m. crash, said public safety spokeswoman Elizabeth Daly-Watts. Grubb was taken by Bayflite to the hospital.
The accident caused about 10 gallons of diesel to spill onto the roadway, which was cleaned up the Clearwater Fire Department. A Pinellas County HazMat team transferred about 80 gallons of fuel from the damaged vehicle to another truck.
Clearwater police closed off the street, which was near Palmetto Street, for about six hours before opening it up to traffic. Grubb was not wearing his seat belt, said Daly-Watts. The investigation is continuing.
