Man charged with second degree murder in death of girlfriend

CLEARWATER ­ Clearwater Police have charged Jeremy Haygood, 27, of Clearwater with second degree murder in the death of his girlfriend, Jeanine Tuckey, 33 of Clearwater.

According to a police report, Haygood allegedly battered Tuckey Nov. 25 at their home at 1161 Kingsley St., Clearwater. Tuckey suffered a head injury and became unresponsive, the report said, then her family called 911. Tuckey was taken to Morton Plant Hospital with life threatening injuries and Haygood was taken to the Pinellas County Jail on an outstanding warrant. Tuckey died about 7:45 a.m. Nov. 26. Haygood is being held without bail for second degree murder.

Bank robber caught
CLEARWATER – Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a man in connection to three bank robberies, and he is also a suspect in two other Pinellas County bank robberies, according to a sheriff’s report.

Charles D. Canales, 25, of Clearwater was arrested at a private residence in St. Petersburg Nov. 21 and charged with two counts of armed robbery with a firearm, armed robbery, two counts of armed bank robbery and a felon in possession of a firearm for allegedly robbing the Bank of America at 4000 Lake St. George Drive, Palm Harbor and the Bank Atlantic at 32491 U.S. 19 N., Palm Harbor, and the SunTrust Bank, 2150 Cleveland St., Clearwater. He is being held at the Pinellas County Jail in lieu of $520,000 bail. According to detectives, Canales robbed the SunTrust Bank on Sept. 24; the Bank of America on Oct. 27 around 10:49 a.m.; and the Bank Atlantic on Nov. 9 around 3:14 p.m. Canales is also the suspect in two bank robberies in St. Petersburg.

Car crashes into house, driver flees
CLEARWATER – A 1996 Ford Crown Victoria crashed into the family room of a Clearwater home around 6:29 a.m. Nov. 21. The driver apparently crossed from Hercules Avenue through the back yard and crashed into the back of the home at 2072 Butternut Circle, according to a Clearwater police report. There were two people in the home at the time of the crash. A woman was asleep in a bedroom and her husband was sitting in the family room at the time of the crash. The man was checked out by Clearwater Fire and Rescue but refused to be taken to the hospital. He did not have any obvious injuries. The unknown driver fled on foot after the crash and there is currently no description of the suspect available. The vehicle was not reported stolen at the time of the crash and the registered owner is not believed to have been the driver, the report said. Before the crash, the driver reportedly hit a few other objects and another house at 2101 Hercules Ave.

Largo man accused of lewd or lascivious battery on a minor
CLEARWATER – A Largo man was arrested Nov. 21 for lewd or lascivious battery of a 15-year-old female. Detectives opened an investigation into a sexual relationship involving John Pierce, 61, and the minor after receiving a tip and discovered that Pierce had engaged in numerous sexual acts with the victim between January and November 2008, according to a press release from Elizabeth Watts, Clearwater public safety spokeswoman. The crimes occurred at a private residence in Clearwater. Pierce is being held at the Pinellas County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.

SWAT standoff ends with arrest
CLEARWATER – A SWAT standoff in Clearwater Nov. 23 ended with the suspect’s surrender, according to a report by Elizabeth Watts, Clearwater public safety spokeswoman. According to the report, Steven Whitley, 20, of 2452 Chase Circle, Clearwater, engaged in a verbal argument with his 18-year-old ex-girlfriend that escalated over a few hours. Whitley allegedly made several threats to shoot and kill her and members of her family, the report said. Around 1:59 a.m., Whitley allegedly drove by the woman’s home and fired six shots. There were three people inside the Clearwater residence at the time, but no one was hurt, the report said. The six rounds from a 9 mm struck and penetrated the residence, the report said.

Whitley was identified as the suspect and located a short time later at the Comfort Inn, room 108 at 26508 U.S. 19 N., Clearwater. The SWAT team was activated and surrounded the hotel. Whitley finally surrendered at 9:30 a.m. and a 9 mm firearm was located in the room, and the suspect’s vehicle contained six expended shell casings, the report said. Whitley is being held without bail at the Pinellas County Jail on two counts of attempted felony murder as well as three counts shooting into an occupied dwelling, aggravated stalking and a felon in possession of a firearm.

Police bust grow house
CLEARWATER – Clearwater narcotics detectives arrested a man for the cultivation of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia after officers discovered a grow house, according to Elizabeth Watts, public safety spokeswoman.

According to a police report, detectives got a tip about a grow house at 1749 Great Brikhill Road, Clearwater and Benjamin Grissom, 34, consented to a search of his residence. During the search, officers found 13 marijuana plants being grown, and two rooms in the house had been converted and equipped to grow additional marijuana. Police also seized three firearms and ammunition. The grow equipment was destroyed in accordance to the Marijuana Grow Act Florida Statute, the report said. Grissom was released from the Pinellas County Jail on $10,150 bail.
