CLEARWATER – Two firefighters risked their lives to save a man from the swirling water of Tampa Bay under the Bayside Bridge Dec. 11.
Clearwater Fire Rescue spokesman Elizabeth Daly said passersby called 911 just after 9 a.m. to report a man clinging to a piling in the water under the bridge.
The first firefighters on the scene threw the man a flotation device, she said. The man released the piling and clung to the flotation device as two firefighters responded with a personal watercraft.
Fire Lt. Jay Schmitt and Firefighter Timothy Smith dragged the man from the water and onto a personal watercraft which carried the man to shore. The victim was taken to a local hospital for psychiatric examination, Daly said. She refused to identify the victim because of city policy so his medical condition couldn’t be determined for this report.
Daly said the man had pulled his car to the side of the roadway and jumped into the water from the top of the bridge.
