DUNEDIN – The Dunedin City Commission unanimously voted for a resolution to fund the Florida Forever program to show the state that this is an important program that should not be eliminated.
In 2008, Dunedin received funds from Florida Forever to help purchase the Weaver Property, and currently the parks and recreation department wants to submit for a grant to receive further funds to help with work on Weaver Park and the Bleakley property, said City Manager Rob DiSpirito. Now, neither Florida’s Senate nor House of Representatives have provided any funding for the program, which would eliminate the program for 2010, DiSpirito said. Therefore, this resolution shows that at least one local government believes the program is worthy of funding, DiSpirito said.
Commissioner Julie Ward Bujalski said Dunedin has been served well by this program and she feels it is a valuable resource for the state.
“I am in definite agreement of some funding to keep the program going and not discontinue it altogether,” Bujalski said.
